Das seit 1997 veranstaltete "Japan Media Arts Festival", in Trägerschaft der japanischen Agentur für Kultur (gehört zum Bildungsministerium) und der Gesellschaft für Computer Graphic Arts, gehört inzwischen zu den renommiertesten Verleihungen für animierte und gezeichnete Kunst in Japan.
Dabei werden jeweils ein "Grand Prize" und 4 "Excellence Prizes" und seit 2002 auch jeweils ein "Encouragement Prize" (2012 in den "New Face Prize" geändert) in den Kategorien
  • Digital Art Interactive (Interaktive Werke die am Computer erstellt wurden wie z. B. Games, interaktive CD-ROMs, Webseiten)
  • Digital Art non Interactive (visuelle Arbeiten die den Computergrafiken benutzen)
  • Animation (Animationen die sowohl traditionelle als auch digitale Technologien weiterentwickeln)
  • Manga (alle Arten von Comics)
verliehen.
Seit 2003 wurden die ersten beiden Kategorien durch "Art" (Kunstwerke die die digitale Technologie weiterentwickeln) und "Entertainment" (Unterhaltungswerke die die digitale Technologie weiterentwickeln) ersetzt, um eine breitere Palette an digitalen Produkten und Werken abdecken zu können.
